The Ashéninka Team was formed to take the good news of God's Word to the Ashéninka people. The goal is to see a church planting movement among this people group.

Marty and Dena McAnally

Marty and Dena McAnally are career missionaries with the IMB. They came to the Ashéninka Team in 1999 after years of serving churches in the states as Minister of Missions. They have been married for 20 years. Their son, Jacob, is 17 years old and loves sports and plays guitar. Berta Oyiya recently joined the family; she is 13 years old, Ashéninka, and comes from the settlement of Yarina Isla. She and Jacob attend Christian schools in Pucallpa. The McAnallys also have a pet monkey named Rosa, another monkey named Joaquin, a dachshund named Jetta, and a Labrador retriever named Moca.

Quilmer Ríos

Quilmer Ríos lives in Atalaya, Peru, and is an Asháninka (a dialect group of similar tradition and culture to the Ashéninka). Quilmer has been serving with us since our return to the Ucayali River in June 2005. He is young, but possesses a Godly wisdom that surpasses his youth. We're thankful for Quilmer's deep desire to serve the Lord and His willingness to sacrifice to do so.

Marcos Viriñao and Nely

Known far and wide as a pastor and evangelist, Marcos labors for the Lord like few men. He walks a long circuit of jungle trails every weekend to deliver Bible teaching and ministry in remote Ashéninka communities. He and Nely are parents of numerous children and have many grandchildren. Although the years increase, Marcos remains tireless for the Lord, living and breathing God's word. He's an example of humility and service for many to follow.

Hyoni Benavides and Manuela

Hyoni and his wife Manuela are a precious couple who love Jesus and labor tirelessly. Hyoni comes from the Yánesha tribe while Manuela is Ashéninka. They pastor the church at Yarina Isla, are our neighbors there and dear friends. They have spent much time in our Pucallpa home and are our constant companions in the field. Hyoni also studies Bible at the Swiss Indian Mission in Pucallpa four months of the year. They have three daughters, Laura, Joselyn, Maqdina, and one more on the way!

Justiniano Shareva and Luzmila

Justiniano has been a pillar in the work with the Ashéninkas since it began over ten years ago. He pastors the church at Belen and frequently travels with the Ashéninka Team in ministry. Along with his wife Luzmila he actively preaches and teaches the scriptures all along the Apurucayali River. Justiniano and Luzmila have several adult children and a number of grandchildren.

Alejandro Santos and Ema

Alejo and wife Ema are true servants of the Lord. They never cease to love people, share the gospel and teach people to love God and obey Him. They were both a part of the team that laboriously translated the Bible into Ashéninka. Alejandro and Ema have worked with the Ashéninka Team since 1999 and continue to labor to reach their people for Christ.

Juan Quispe and Adela

Juan and Adela pastor the church at Alto San Luis. They are truly committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and work hard to make Him known in their community and in other places where they travel. They have been a great support to our team since 2005 and are dear friends as well. They have four children, Ruth, Wenda, Israel, José Luis, and Marty.

Ashéninka Leaders

These are the men and women who will carry on the work long after the missionaries are gone.  They are people just like all of us who are trying to care for their families, though under more difficult conditions than many of us. These are the ones in whom we invest our time and energies so that they may be equipped to share the Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their own language.

Prayer Warriors

As important as the physical work of the Ashéninka Team and their actual presence in Perú, are the prayers of the Team's prayer supporters. Those who pray for the Ashéninka people and the work of the Team number in the thousands. Each is an invaluable link between the People Group and the Team, and the throne of God. We depend on the Lord's strength to do this work. Our work is worthless without the Lord's hand on it. It is He who produces all the fruit.
